Apple Sued Over Lack of MMS on iPhones

November 18th, 2009

Few weeks ago, Finish phone company Nokia sued Apple over patent infringement and now another sue against Apple has been issued. This time, a group of consumers are unsatisfied with the iPhone 3G S, claiming the commercials are misleading and therefore suing both Apple and AT&T.

In the commercials, Apple promises full MMS compatibility and with that possibility to send and receive videos, photos and sounds. That is, according to the sue, not true to what the iPhone 3G S can, although AT&T and Apple have promised to recondition the lack of MMS.

Late September, AT&T activated the MMS function for their iPhone customers, but apparently it didn’t succeed without failures.

iPhone Finally Hits the Chinese Market

October 30th, 2009

Today, the iPhone finally got through the Great Wall, and can now be purchased in China. iPhone can only be bought with the carrier China Unicom and it’s priced from 4,999 yuan to 6,999 yuan (approximately $730 to $1,025) for the high-end, 32-gigabyte iPhone 3GS, which can be a problem for carrier, China Unicom, because the iPhone can be bought unlocked from the streets for only 5,700 yuan ($835), and actually you’ll get more out of the iPhone, when purchased from merchants, because not only it is cheaper, it also has WiFi availability. No, the iPhone bought from China Unicom does not feature any WiFi connectivity, due to a restriction imposed by the Chinese government. The Associated Press states the reason:

Unicom’s iPhones lack WiFi because it was temporarily banned by Beijing, which was promoting a rival Chinese system, according to BDA. The ban was relaxed in May after manufacturing had begun.

A Unicom spokesman, Yi Difei, said the company hopes to have WiFi in the next batch of phones.

“We are talking with Apple and expect the problem to be solved by the end of this year,” Yi said.

The lack of WiFi connectivity, together with the high price compared to street merchants, can easily be factors that will make the iPhone’s debut at the Chinese market a failure.

TomTom car kit available in European online stores… again

October 9th, 2009

tomtomiphoneFor about two weeks ago, we wrote that the TomTom car kit for iPhone was available for purchasing in European online Apple stores, but after a short while, they were removed without any explanation.

Now, the TomTom car kit for iPhone is available again, but still in European online stores only. The price at 99.95 GBP hasn’t changed, but unlike the earlier listings is the TomTom navigation app NOT included if you buy the car kit, which is noted in the product describtion.

**Note: The TomTom app for iPhone is not included with this TomTom Car Kit. The Car Kit dock is compatible with all iPhone models, but the TomTom app only works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

The reason why it was removed just a short while after it appeared in Apple’s online store was probably because of a misunderstanding between TomTom and Apple. In the first release it said that the application was included with the car kit, which was preferable because the price of the application and the price of the car kit were almost the same. This time though, it’s nearly twice as expensive, if you want the original TomTom car kit.

An announcement of the products entrance to the American market hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s expected to be priced at $119.95 and also without the application.
