Magic Mouse has Captured Over 10 Percent Market Share

December 29th, 2009

MagicMouseIn October this year, along with new iMacs, Apple introduced Magic Mouse, the world’s first mouse with a multi- touch surface, like the one you see on iPhones and MacBooks. Magic Mouse’s predecessor, Mighty Mouse, never became any success and many have complained about the scroll ball, but Magic Mouse is completely different, and after just 8 weeks on the market, it has captured over 10 pct. market share, and Apple is now the third best selling mouse manufacturer, behind Microsoft and Logitech.

Though Apple is in third place, their superiors on the mouse market are far ahead, and Apple will by no chance catch up with them as yet, but Apple has felt the demand on Magic Mouse and here at AppleLunch we have actually experienced that it was impossible to purchase Magic Mouse anywhere in Aarhus, Denmark. Premium Reseller “humac” told that they haven’t had any Magic Mouses since November, and were not expecting to have any before late January, so if you want a Magic Mouse, and you live outside America, we recommend you to buy it from Apple Online Store.

Steve Jobs named CEO of the Decade

November 5th, 2009

Steve Jobs - KeynoteSteven Paul Jobs, Apple CEO and co-founder, the 43rd richest man in America and largest individual Disney shareholder, is according to Fortune named ‘CEO of the Decade‘ for his role in turning Apple into a groundbreaking technology leader.

Youthful founder gets booted from his company in the 1980s, returns in the 1990s, and in the following decade survives two brushes with death, one securities-law scandal, an also-ran product lineup, and his own often unpleasant demeanor to become the dominant personality in four distinct industries, a billionaire many times over, and CEO of the most valuable company in Silicon Valley.

One reason why Jobs is named as CEO of the decade is that he, after his return to Apple, introduced the iMac that became a breakthrough with its all-in-one computer system, and it reestablished Apple’s economy, and in 2001 he and Apple launched iTunes as a music software and later the same year Apple released the first iPod, but those events didn’t seemed to help in an established market, and takeovers were rumored.

Steve JobsAt this time, Macintosh computers were mainly used by students and artists, but Steve Jobs had a plan and he convinced the rest of Apple’s board that it would be a great idea to build retail stores, and at the same time it was realized that Apple had to become different on designs compared to the successful blandness of Microsoft, Dell and Intel. That difference proved to be a breakthrough and after a short while, people came to Apple begging for the next iPod.

In 2002 Apple made iTunes Windows compatible, and it became another huge step forward for Apple and just a year after, iTunes Store was opened and became pioneer in digital music. 5 years later another brilliant idea was realized: the App Store. But wait, isn’t something missing? Of course. The iPod became an astonishing success, and in 2007 Apple reinvented the phone. In other words, they introduced the iPhone – an iPod and a phone in one single device.

In January 2009, Steve Jobs took a 5 months leave of absence from Apple to undergo a liver transplant, and fans of Apple didn’t saw him until September 9th, when he returned as first keynote speaker and presented among other a new iPod Nano lineup.

At AppleLunch we couldn’t agree more to Fortunes decision of naming Steve Jobs as ‘CEO of the Decade’ and without him, Apple news and rumors wouldn’t be that interesting to follow.

October 3rd, 2009

Steve JobsAccording to Forbes’ annual list of wealthiest Americans, Steve Jobs is this year ranked as 43rd with a net worth of approximately $5.1 billion. More images of Microsoft booklet – Courier

September 30th, 2009

Since our latest published rumors of the Microsoft booklet of increasingly rising interest, called Courier, we have collected some new images of the product. Sources tell us that the earlier posted images and YouTube video are in fact of a late prototype of Courier. This means that the booklet’s look and shape may be finished and that Microsoft is planning a release, or official announcement, in the nearest future. There are no visual changes to the product in the images, and they seem to be of the same prototype.

The Microsoft booklet, Courier, will serve as electronic alternative to an ordinary notebook. It has multi-touch display, wireless Internet connection, integrated maps, address book, navigation and a neat interface which features several graphical interactive actions, such as clip & paste. It is understood as highly organized competition to Apple’s upcoming tablet, as Courier is said to have been under secret development ever since the first rumors of an Apple tablet went public.

More iPhone competition – Again from Microsoft, in Pink

September 24th, 2009

Before we started this website, we had followed many other sites reporting of a possible Microsoft phone, which was said to arrive in 2010. However, it was difficult to determine the reliability of those sources, as it all seemed like “just a rumor”. Also many sites refused to believe it, because Microsoft would kind of compete with phones which already use the Windows Mobile OS platform, should they choose to make their own phone. But now though, it appears that this is in fact what the company plans to do.

The earlier rumors, about which we just wrote, said that Microsoft was developing a smartphone codenamed Pink. The phone would be running Windows Mobile and manufactured by a third-party company. And now to the interesting stuff… In new rumors, Gizmodo reports that the “Pink” project actually contains two models, one name Turtle and one called Pure. The phones will feature about all the same functionality as an iPhone, just done the “Microsoft way”, such as an App Store, music and video. It is possible that we will see an integration between the upcoming App Store and the Zune Marketplace. The two following images were posted by Gizmodo and is believed to be prototypes of the two smartphone models (top: Turtle, bottom: Pure).

Turtle prototypePure prototypeSo… what do you think? Will this product be able to compete with iPhone on a high level, or will it simply be another Zune story? Enjoy your launch!

New PC Tablet concept from Microsoft – Courier to compete with Apple Tablet

September 23rd, 2009
Possible design of coming Apple tablet?

Possible design of coming Apple tablet?

And while we are all waiting for more news of the rumored Apple Tablet, Microsoft reveals plans for a similar product. This places Microsoft and Apple in close competition around tablets, even though none of the companies have actually launched any of those devices. There are rumors that Microsoft has revealed their tablet concept this soon, because they try to appear ahead of Apple on the market. Being the first with this kind of revolutionary tablet, could be essential for a starting success. New rumors and possible evidence of an Apple tablet frequently rise, and though there are no trustworthy pictures of the product yet (as with the new Microsoft tablet), it is almost certain that Apple will introduce such a product within 2010.

172431-courier_188Microsoft’s tablet differs from others in some ways, since it hasn’t got any of the usual tablet OS integrations (yeah, not even Windows), but a tailored one made only for this product (so far). The PC Tablet is foldable, just as ordinary notebooks, and features a 7-inch display and is codenamed Courier. It does feature several functions new to the market, which focuses on basically converting all kinds of office tasks to electronic processes. This includes handwriting, clip and paste, copying, address book integrations and much more, everything in smooth graphics and with enabled multi-touch. In other words, the tablet is simply an advanced electronic notebook -- just with integrated address book, internet, photo sharing, camera etc. We have embedded the following video, which previews the device:

There are currently no indications of when Microsoft’s Tablet PC might arrive, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we get any reports. Meanwhile, Apple’s tablet has been rumored to be official announced in February 2010 following the company’s traditional spring product updates and announcements. This does not mean however, that it will be launched in February, though it is likely that Apple launches the product shortly after the announcement has been made. Enjoy your lunch!

Apple is the 20th best global brand

September 21st, 2009

Apple logoAccording to the English branding consultancy Interbrand, Apple has moved from being the 24th best brand in the world and is now the 20th best brand. Research from Interbrand valued Apple’s brand $15.4 billion, which is a 12% growing since last year.

Interbrand reported that the growth was caused by “a record high iPod sales, doubling sales of the iPod Touch, and all-time high market share for Mac OS software.” The recession hasn’t taken out Apple, who lowered their prices of many products, such as the $99 iPhone and the new iPod Shuffle.

Apple has been placed in the “Computer Hardware” section, and only Intel and HP are above Apple in the Best Global Brands List 2009. The best brand in the world though, is Coca Cola right in front of IBM and Apple’s all time rival, Microsoft. Last mentioned’s brand value though, has decreased by 4% since last year, despite Microsoft Bing’s launch in June and a $300 million ad campaign, featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates.

The full list of the 100 best global brands can be found here.

“Hey, let’s get an App Store”

September 20th, 2009

Back in October App Store-logo2007, Steve Jobs announced in an open letter posted to Apple’s “Hot News”, that a software development kit would be released to third-party developers of iPhone applications in the beginning of 2008, and March 6, 2008 Apple hosted the media event, called “iPhone Software Roadmap” and the first beta-release of iPhone Software Development Kit (aka. iPhone SDK) became available immediately. The only thing missing, was a platform to publish all the new applications that the developers has created and it came with the iPhone firmware 2.0 in June 2008 and was called “App Store.” What Apple had no clue about, back in March 2008 when they announced the App Store, was that it turned out to be an amazingly successful business plan, but we will get back to this later.

1393387568The deal

Of course, developers want money if they should create applications for the iPhone, and Apple made the App Store the exclusive way to legally distribute applications for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, so what’s the “carrot” in this deal? Well, developers have been given the opportunity to pick the price they want to sell their apps for, and the developers earn 70% of the revenues while Apple keeps the remaining 30% to pay for running the App Store (and to improve the creditability in their bank account), and Apple also takes care of any credit card fees, hosting fees and marketing fees. It’s a great deal for developers, despite they only gets 70% of revenues paid monthly.

What about the free apps? There are thousands of free applications available in iTunes App Store, and some of them will get a review here at AppleLunch each Thursday, but what’s the point of making free applications? Well, if a developer wants to distribute an application for free, Apple demands no charge of it, neither from the developer nor the user. All you need is to join the iPhone Developer Program for $99.

Limitations

Apple doesn’t waapp limitationsnt everything to be published at iTunes App Store, of course. Things like malicious applications and porn won’t be accepted by App Store reviewers, neither will applications which are nearly identical to the iPhone’s original applications, such as the iPod function, Safari, etc. Though, with the iPhone OS 3.0 release, Apple has lifted their limitations a bit and allowed adult content in the App Store; applications you are only allowed to buy if you are at least 17 years old. Apple’s app reviewers have been criticized a lot in the media of their approval process and often you hear about an application that has been declined because of a tiny mistake, and the developers have to wait for another two to three weeks to get the application approved, and some, according to the media, even say that they’ve waited in months to get their applications approved by App Store reviewers.

App Store Resource Center

Apple isn’t ignorant of the criticism about the App Store reviewers, and therefore, this week, they have launched an App Store Resource Center to help developers submitting their creations correctly. It also helps developers how to find leverage features and marketing resources, and things you must have done before you can submit your binary.

A “gold mine”

What Apple launched back in June 2008 showed to be a gold mine for Apple. It surpassed every expectations and before it turned a year, 1 BILLION applications had been purchased from the App Store and 30% of the revenue went straight into Apple’s pocket.

billion appWhen App Store was launched July 11, 2008, 500 applications were available, 125 of them were free downloads. On Apple’s Media Event, September 9, 2009, iTunes App Store contained more than 75,000 apps and approximately 1,800,000,000 downloads to date, and that’s roughly 4,235,300 downloads a day in average, and with more iPhones to come out on the market, that number might increase and with the iPhone’s entrance on the Chinese market in just a few months, the average downloads a day will surely increase a lot.

Competitors want to get their part

android-marketApple’s success with the iTunes App Store hasn’t been neglected by the other manufactures of mobile operating systems. Google saw the potential in an online application store early and implemented it into Android in fall 2008. In the beginning, only free applications were to find in Google Android Market, as it was named, but to make Google Androd Market grow, they needed more customers and developers and in spring 2009 they announced the same 70/30 model as Apple uses in their iPhone Developer Program.

Next competitor on the market is Palm Software Store, announced in late 2008 and launched on June 6, 2009, and it has the biggest number of compatible devices yet, and it supports not only Palm OS-mobiles, but also Windows Mobile phones. In three weeks they hit their first milestone with one million downloads and amazingly 30 applications (irony.. what can I say). To compare, iPhone had after just three DAYS 800 apps available and 10 million downloads.

BlackBerry App World, is the name of the app store forblackberry_app_world certian Blackberry devices, and went live on April 1, 2009. This store was previously called BlackBerry Application Storefront, but circumstances changed its name to BlackBerry App World instead. To buy applications on BlackBerry App World, you’ll need a Blackberry device of course, but also a PayPal account to pay for the app.

With the Nokia N97, Nokia got through the gate and into the world of phones with a built-in app store. They decided to call their app store Nokia Ovi Store and was launched in May 2009. If the app isn’t free of charge, it can be bought using a credit card, or through the operator billing in selected operators. Inspired from Apple, Nokia also uses the 70/30 model to pay the developers for creating applications to the Nokia Ovi Store.

The last competitor is Apple’s all time rival, Microsoft. At a time this fall, Microsoft will launch their so called Microsoft Marketplace in 29 countries. The minimum requirements is a phone compatible with Windows Mobile 6.5 and if you have an older model, you cannot upgrade and get Microsoft Marketplace. It only comes with new models and this could be a huge disaster for Microsoft, but would that be a surprise? ;-) In fact, Microsoft has already one kind of app store planned, not for phones, but for the Microsoft Zune HD, called Zune Marketplace, but it only contains music, video and podcasts and is more like iTunes. However Microsoft has confirmed that in the near future, apps will be available on Zune Market with the 4.0 software update.

The future of apps

iTunes App Store is growing every day wtomtomiphoneith all kinds of applications, the one more advanced than the other. In the beginning, only small developers submitted applications, but when the huge companies got a taste of it, major applications began to arrive in the app store. Specially Electronic Arts began to develop games, including the bestseller The Sims 3. In January 2009 at WWDC, TomTom announced that they had decided to create a turn-by-turn GPS application for the iPhone 3G and later models, along with an accessory called TomTom Car Kit, which is a dock that you can use in your car and improves the GPS signal.

What is more fascinating, is applications like Metro Paris Subways that tells you what a certain building contains, just by pointing at it with the camera. If applications continues development, it will go beyond any kind of limitations of what you can image in just a few years. We all look forward to see apps in the future. With the iPhone developers and the App Store, only Apple makes limitations. Enjoy your lunch.
